Self Care

Knowing your limits.

Being a Mom its sometimes hard to put the breaks on everything I must accomplish is a day. Who out there can relate, if your a Mom or a Dad I know you can. If you can’t please let the rest of us know your secret.

I have been working really hard the past few years to know when I need to put on the brakes on all the things I need to do in a day.

The first thing I ask myself when I’m at my limit is, Why? I often have a To Do List and I think ” I need to get this done or I need to schedule time in my day to get this done.” But one thing that has really helped me is whenever the word “need” crosses my mind is I ask myself, do I really need to get this done. Who and why do I need to take or such task. For myself, my family, is it a priority, is it just something I want to do. I re-evaluate, because often it isn’t something “I Need” to get done right now. Another thing I do is when family members say “You Need” to do this I really evaluate what they are asking me.

I have learned to not just respond, instead I will say I will let you know in or at a set time. That way I am giving myself a little time to think about it and evaluate what I have going on, that way I can say “Yes” or “No” with a happy heart knowing it will not overwhelm be or send me over the edge. If your anything like me I say “YES” way to much and it turns me into a angry elf if you know what I mean. I get grumpy with my family and I don’t take care of myself because I am over extended.

A few other things I do to take care of myself is things I enjoy. One thing I enjoy is having a bedtime routine. My bedtime routine is essential to my mood and how well I sleep. Which is you are not sleeping well there is a good chance you are feeling stressed.  Here is what my routine is, the first thing I do is light a candle or put some lavender oil into my diffuser and make a cup of tea. I spend a few minutes massaging my moisturizer into my face at night and use a body lotion that smells wonderful and promotes relaxation. Right now Bath and Body Work Aromatherapy Sleep is fabulous. Another great scent they have is Comfort. I spend some time journaling. I love to have some quite time to write down my thoughts and remind myself of my blessings. I have a notebook that I use as my To Do List, so I write down and plan out my following day, this way I’m not worried about what I need to get done the next day. I just dump it all into my To Do list and forget about it.

Here are some other ideas:

  • walking
  • reading
  • praying
  • just sitting quietly and reflecting
  • make a list on your phone “Attitude of Gratitude” and type in things you are grateful for. It’s a great mood booster to go back and read through that list.
  • create something
  • breath deeply and do some stretches
  • go to coffee with someone you love
